We use a multilevel carving and etching process called Image Blasting. Once a design has been rendered for reproduction, the process starts by covering the material to be blasted with protective resist, cutting the design into the resist, and finally removing pieces of resist to expose areas of the material to be removed. In this part of the process we use several machines to remove the exposed material.
After each layer is carved or blasted into the material, more pieces of the protective resist are removed for further carving or blasting. Some areas are deeply carved to provide edges which catch the light in bright, sharp lines. (When you can feel an edge, it is called carving.) Other areas are lightly etched and shaded to diffuse and soften the light. (When you can see an edge, but not feel it, its called etching.) This process creates the image with reflected and diffused light, rather than color or inks that absorb light, and gives the image a three-dimensional look. After the last area is carved or etched, the piece is soaked to remove the remaining protective resist, and then cleaned, inspected, and signed
